Centerville Road Electric Reliability Enhancements Project
As part of its ongoing commitment to provide best-in-class services, the City of Tallahassee will begin construction on an electric infrastructure enhancement project along Centerville Road in May 2026. This work will further strengthen the system’s resilience against severe weather and improve reliability.
Work includes replacing the power lines and poles along Centerville Road from Hodges Drive to roughly Potts Road.
Specifically, the project scope is to re-conductor a 4/0 and 559 lineups of mixed construction to a double 559 Hendrix. The 559 Hendrix is a stronger, tree-coded cable and allows for a narrower system profile, ideal for the canopy road environment along Centerville Road. Additionally, nearly all the current poles within the project area were installed in the 1960s and 1970s. While all have passed inspection, they are nearing the end of their useful life.
In advance of this planned work, tree pruning along the corridor in the project area has been completed.
During construction, no planned electric outages are anticipated.
The project involves both daytime and nighttime work, depending on the phase of construction. Some noise is anticipated throughout, and there will be bright lights in the work zone at night.
City Electric crews will perform the work, and safety is paramount. As such, Centerville Road will be closed in four phases during construction. Emergency vehicles will always be allowed passage through the work zone, but regular traffic will be detoured. All detours will be clearly marked to route traffic around the construction zone. Access to private property will be maintained.
The first phase of construction will be between Hodges Drive and just north of Betton Road from May 26 to June 16 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week. There will be a hard closure – meaning no traffic access except for emergency vehicles – within the work zone. Regular thru traffic will be detoured. Northbound traffic on Centerville Road / Magnolia Drive will be detoured at Seventh Avenue. Southbound traffic on Centerville Road will be detoured at Blair Stone Road. Eastbound traffic on Betton Road / Bradford Road will be detoured at Thomasville Road. Local access only will be permitted up to the work zone.

Pending no unforeseen circumstances or severe weather delays:
- The second phase of construction will be between Betton Road and Trescott Drive from June 20 to July 11 during daytime hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- The third phase of construction will be between Trescott Drive and Woodgate Way from July 11 to August 12 during daytime hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- The fourth phase of construction will be between Woodgate Way and roughly Potts Road (near Capital Health Plan on Centerville Road) from September 28 to November 1 during nighttime hours, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
This project has been in development for approximately 10 years. During this time, the City’s Electric Utility has implemented other system enhancements on and near the corridor. Completing this project will help meet the system’s modern operational needs, further strengthen the system against severe weather and create new redundancies and efficiencies to improve reliability.
